This 17" LCD from LG is an unassuming little thing, and is the only beige monitor in this group test. A grey back and base add a little interest to the looks, but it would still seem more at home in an office than sat next to a neon glowing modded case. At a mere £190 however, it can be forgiven.

The really good news is the 16ms response time, and 450:1 contrast ratio. Picture quality is good, and scaling to 800x600 and 1024x768 are done well. The OSD is straightforward to use, but you may never have to touch it because the automatic configuration works well.

The specifications and price are almost identical to the AOC LM725, but the LG monitor wins points for its higher contrast ratio. The base of the screen is very stiff, and it is hard to tilt back and forth. This is a great budget TFT, and there is very little to choose between the LG and AOC offerings, but the AOC LM725 gets a slightly higher score because it looks so much more attractive. This isn't a priority for everyone.
