CPU block and mounting systems
The block is made of aluminum, and measures in at 72 x 62 x 12 mm.
It has a single inlet and a single outlet, and is very simple in design. The
base is fairly flat and even, but would surely become better with some lapping.
It has some small machining marks, but I’ve seen worse. It’s a real shame 3R
Systems didn't make these in copper instead of aluminum, but at least this solution
is cheaper.
The socket A clip is indeed very simple as well, and consists of two metal
pieces that joined together will hold the block onto the socket, engaging all
socket lugs on both sides. It applies all its pressure to the block
right above where the CPU die is located.
Included in the package is a special P4 adapter that will let you use this
kit with a Pentium 4 CPU. I didn't test this adapter, so I can’t say how well
it works but it looks ok to me.
There is nothing fancy about this block, and is to be considered as an entry
level CPU block. These pictures clearly show how the clip catches all socket
lugs, and they should also give you an idea of the CPU blocks’s size and thickness
(or lack thereof).
A close up of the CPU block and clip
A good overview picture of the block. Notice how the clip applies pressure right
above the CPU die.
Another close up– notice how it catches all three socket lugs in both sides
for a firm attachment.
