It would seem the 16-pipe parts show a bigger difference than the 12-pipe
parts. Nvidia has a clear win in the synthetic benchmarks, and holds its
own in Far Cry. This time we see a dramatic difference in performance in Halo,
but speeds are still quite playable on both cards. Once again, it is Call of
Duty pulling nVidia down, but hardly into unplayable speeds.
Final Words
Both manufacturers have managed to produce cards signifacntly faster than their
previous generations. Claims of double the performance increase, are in places
more than justified.
I would say overall ATi have an advantage over nVidia, but not a particuarly
huge one. If the pricing is right, both sets of cards should sell well. Rest
assured, we will be following up with reviews of consumer products.
What we have yet to see is the performance difference PS 3.0 support will make.
nVidia being the only supporters of this standard so far, are suggesting improvements
of up to 35%. We will be testing this and the PCI Express versions of these
cards over the next couple of days, so we recommend checking back or signing
up to the mailing list on the front page.
If you are considering buying a 6800 Ultra, we recommend reading our power consumption testing.
