This matched pair of 512MB modules from Corsair are the fanciest looking in
the group test. Being a matched pair means they are guaranteed to be very stable
when run in dual channel mode. The most striking feature on the Corsair XMS
PRO range of memory modules, are the LEDs that run along the top. As soon as
you turn the system on, you will see a double line of green, orange and red
LEDs flicker up and down the top of each DIMM. These lights serve as an indicator
for memory bandwidth usage. Really, this function isn't too useful, as they
just flicker up and down almost constantly regardless of what your computer
is doing. They do however tell you when the computer has crashed, and look quite
pretty. This is always a plus for those with windows in their cases.
The modules are covered with large black heat spreaders. They have small fins
on them, and make the module much taller than standard modules at 45mm. A trial
fitting showed they were happy in a Shuttle PC with plenty of room to spare,
so the larger dimensions shouldn't prove to be a problem.
Corsair does not quote any guaranteed overclocking speeds for this memory,
even though it is a very able performer. It is sold as low latency memory, running
2-2-2-5 settings at DDR 400. It cheerfully runs these timings at 250mhz, making
it very good stuff for overclocking. Corsair obviously wants you to buy their
XMS Xtreme range for overclocking, but you would struggle to find a board that
supports much faster than this. As it was, our motherboard was the limiting
factor rather than the memory.
