Not too long ago, IBM sold off their hard drive business to Hitachi. The Deskstar name is still used by Hitachi, and the current range of Deskstar drives look physically very similar to the old IBM range.

.

This example is the ATA/100 250GB model. You would expect this drive to be slow, but surprisingly, it is the second fastest drive in this group test. Where as other drives of this capacity have seek times around 10ms, the Deskstar 7K250 manages a very credible 6.9ms.

Price per GB is 48p, exactly the same as the Maxtor MaXline 2 250GB, but a good 60% faster. Noise levels and heat output are average, but the real strength of the Deskstar is that almost all machines will support it, with its PATA interface. The PC Mark score of 5398 easily beats every other Parallel ATA drive on test, and is even faster than the 36 GB 10,000RPM SATA Raptor from Western Digital, which scored 5215. This drive is highly recommended for upgrading an older system, and would also be a prime candidate for running in a RAID array.
