Cable Braiding Guide

After reading a thread about this stuff on AOA Forums (my eyes having recovered from their Perspex shrapnel attack, see: Transparent Bay Fan Mod), I decided to investigate. I asked a few people exactly what it was you got and what you did with it. I then bought some, and did the mod and wrote this article about it.

PSU cables are damn annoying. They're straggly, the get hooked on things and generally look untidy and there's always a lot of them. Here is a picture of my QTec 550W Gold PSU. As you can see, although the PSU is gorgeous with its shiny goldenness and transparent (but unlit) 80mm fans, the cables look pretty nasty even when straightened out (a bit); they're even worse inside my case.

So I heard about this braiding stuff in the forums and that you could get it from OCS (Ed: Written before closing.). You cover the cables in this braiding stuff and just let the molex connectors come out at each end. This looks much tidier than the 4 12V, G, G & 5V cables you'd normally get. The braiding is like little black plastic fibres woven together. It has a tendency to unravel at the ends (which is why you need to seal them) and when you push the two ends together, the weave changes angle and the tube gets wider (upto about 2cm I found). When you pull the ends it gets a lot thinner - like those "Chinese" finger traps they sell in crappy science museum shops; try to pull you finger out and it squeezes tighter.

This picture shows first the 4 pin molex connector, then the rubber heat-shrinking tubing (for sealing the ends of the braiding) and then the braiding itself. In the blurred foreground you can just see the strands coming out. In the background where my camera can actually focus, you can hopefully make out what the braiding looks like.
